Refinement factor

Set the size reduction used by mesh adaptation.

Location

Mesh → Mesh Adaptation → Refinement factor

Initial value: 1.5.

Use a finite dimensionless factor greater than 1. Naive Improve accuracy divides the initial sizes by this factor raised to Maximum adaptation cycles; 2 with two cycles gives one quarter of the initial size. Solution-driven divides marked local target sizes by the factor.

Using the value

Use a modest factor, then inspect element growth and the new solution.

Troubleshooting

A factor at or below 1 is rejected for adaptation. Rapid refinement can exceed Maximum elements or available memory.
