Refinement

Rescale the global maximum element-size target for the supported structured mesh path.

Rescale the global maximum element-size target for the supported structured mesh path.

Where to find it

Mesh workspace; System → Mesh

How to use it

Set Refinement factor, build and inspect the resulting mesh, then rerun the affected study. This control does not apply the stored Selection as a local refinement mask and does not refine an unstructured Netgen mesh. Choose Build Mesh to apply the sequence.

Settings and initial values

SettingInitial valueMeaning
Selectionallall selects the applicable domains; otherwise use a named selection or the selection editor. In the supported structured meshing path Refinement factor rescales the global maximum size; Selection is not a local refinement mask.
Refinement factor2In the supported structured meshing path, a positive factor divides the global maximum size: 2 halves it and 0.5 doubles it. Multiple enabled Refinement factors accumulate. Without a finite maximum size this operation has no size to rescale; it does not apply Selection as a local refinement mask. Do not expect this feature to refine an unstructured Netgen mesh; change its size controls or use supported solution-driven adaptation instead.

Result

Inspect the element distribution and counts before running a study.

Troubleshooting

For an unstructured mesh, use its generator and Size controls. Old solver results still belong to the previous mesh until a new solve completes.
